Exam Companion for BEE Guidebook Book 6 — Code Compliance for Energy Efficiency and Sustainability in Buildings

BEE and TERI have published two guidebooks for the Energy Auditor (Building) examination. Book 6 covers Paper 6: the statutory framework of the Energy Conservation Act and its 2022 amendment, the roles of BEE and the State-Designated Agencies, code compliance under ECSBC 2024 for commercial buildings and ENS 2024 for residential buildings, the implementation framework of statutory Forms I to XIII, and the numerical checks an auditor performs on a project.
Following our companion for Book 5, SEA Energy has prepared a companion for Book 6. It is free to download and is aimed at candidates preparing for the certification, and at architects, engineers and Urban Local Body officials who need a working grasp of code compliance.
What the companion contains
Every exercise printed at the end of Chapters 1 to 7 of the guidebook — 71 objective, 35 short-answer and 14 long-answer questions — with a full worked answer for each.
A supplementary question set for Chapter 8, Energy Terminology, for which the guidebook carries no exercise. Definition-based questions are a reliable source of marks in Paper 6.
All 14 practice numericals from the back of the guidebook, recomputed step by step: openable window-to-floor ratio, window-to-wall ratio, wall and roof U-values, RETV, equivalent SHGC with overhangs and fins, manual daylight calculation, waste sizing, MEPI and PES, the envelope trade-off (EPF) method and insulation sizing.
A 200-mark model question paper set to the examination pattern — 50 objective, 10 short-answer and 5 long-answer questions, with complete solutions.
A quick-reference appendix of statutory sections, thresholds and the standards cited in compliance verification.
Every answer and every number has been checked
This is the part that took the time. We checked each printed answer key against the guidebook text it is drawn from, and recomputed all 14 numericals from the given data. The document carries an open Verification Statement and Corrections Register recording exactly what was checked, what was corrected and what still needs to be read against the published code.
A few examples of what the register covers: a Chapter 5 question repeated from Chapter 4 with two questions numbered alike, which shifts the answer key; a missing pair of brackets in the combined side-fin shading formula; a rounding slip in the inorganic waste storage volume; a figure labelled as "required savings" that is in fact the maximum allowable consumption; and typing errors in the envelope trade-off baseline. In every case the engineering conclusion of the guidebook still holds — the arithmetic simply needed tidying, and a candidate who reproduces the printed working in the examination should know where it differs.
The register also flags two items that depend on a threshold in the published code rather than on the guidebook text, so that readers can verify them before the examination rather than take them on trust.
