ABOUT THE EXAMINATION

What the 26th NCE Energy Auditor (Building) paper covers

The National Certification Examination (NCE) is held under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. For the 26th NCE it is conducted by the Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Productivity (AIP), the training arm of the National Productivity Council (NPC) in Chennai — the designated National Certifying Agency — on behalf of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

The examination certifies Energy Managers, Energy Auditors and Energy Auditors (Building). This companion is built for the Energy Auditor (Building) track, which tests the two 2024 building frameworks — ECSBC 2024 for commercial and office buildings and ENS 2024 for residential buildings — drawn from BEE National Certification Guidebooks Book 5 and Book 6.

A candidate must score at least 50% in each paper to qualify. Your admit card, exam schedule and results are published on the official portal, nceexam.in. Always confirm dates and paper structure there before your exam.

QUICK-REFERENCE STANDARDS

Codes worth committing to memory

Several answers turn on a threshold printed in the code rather than on the underlying physics. These are the standards the guidebooks lean on — the full matrix is inside the companion.

Standard

Subject area

Why it matters

IS 10500 : 2012

Drinking water quality

Potable parameters; TDS and coliform limits for drinking and food preparation

IS 16590

Chiller rating

Full-load and part-load IPLV / COP efficiency benchmarks

IS/ISO 16890

Air filters

HVAC particulate classification — ePM1, ePM2.5, ePM10

IS 17515

Vertical transport

Lift energy-efficiency classes; Class A required for the Super tier

IS 3646 (Part 1)

Interior illumination

Recommended illuminance and lighting quality by task and space

ISO 15099

Glazing performance

U-factor, SHGC and VLT for frame and centre-of-glass

EN ISO 7730

Thermal comfort

PMV and PPD comfort indices and comfort boundary curves

ASHRAE 140

Energy simulation

Standard test for validating whole-building simulation engines

ASHRAE 55

Thermal environment

Adaptive comfort model and operative temperature

IEEE 519 / IEC 61000

Power quality

Harmonic voltage and current limits at the point of common coupling

HOW TO PREPARE

Four ways to get the most from it

•   Lock the objective bank first. Work Section A across all eleven chapters early; the paper rewards knowing definitions, classes and code numbers cold.

•   Do the numericals by hand. Recurring calculations — U = 1/R with surface films, cooling-tower range/approach, evaporation loss, transformer copper loss ∝ load², 1 TR = 3.517 kW — should feel automatic before exam day.

•   Keep the threshold tables close. Envelope U-factors, SHGC, lighting power density and chiller COP limits come straight from ECSBC 2024 / ENS 2024. Where an answer hinges on the code value, memorise the value.

•   Sit the model paper timed. Attempt the full 200-mark paper once under three-hour conditions, then mark yourself against the worked solutions to find where time and accuracy slip.

PLEASE NOTE

A study aid, not a substitute for the code

•   This companion is compiled by SEA Energy from the official BEE National Certification Guidebooks (Book 5 & Book 6). It is an independent preparation aid and is not published or endorsed by BEE or NPC.

•   It does not replace the official guidebooks, the prospectus, or the ECSBC 2024 and ENS 2024 code text. Always cross-check thresholds and clauses against the current code before relying on them.

•   Every numerical solution was recomputed from first principles and every objective answer checked against building-science and code practice before publication; a verification and corrections register is included inside.

•   Free to download, use and share for exam preparation. If it helps you, pass it on to a fellow candidate.
